This is the best system EVER!

(Note: I just want to say that Sue Patrick is very adament about the system being done with clear shoe boxes. It is a great tool for visual learners and sn kids. However, if that were the only option I would not have ever given the system a second thought. Please read her site and book to learn her heart for the system that she came up with. :-))

My friend, Leslie, introduced me to to the Workbox System and I am in love! This is a great tool for all you homeschoolers out there. The following quote is from Sue Patrick's Workbox System website:

An effective teaching system to reduce your organizational time and increase your child's self-control, independence and learning.
Specialized for: Autism, ADD ADHD, and
Large Home School Families
This system will compliment your existing curriculum!

Here's how it works: Set up 12 plastic shoe boxes and store them on a plastic shoe rack with wheels. Fill the boxes each evening with school work, games, crafts, projects, etc.... whatever you want your child to get done in a school day. Then your children's school work is all ready to go the next day. Now, we have way too many kids for all that this system suggest. Eight shoe racks and 96 boxes??? No way am I even willing to go there! So I tweaked Sue Patrick's system to work for me. (Sue Patrick believes strongly to use the shoe boxes as a visual for the children so use the shoe boxes if you can.)

I use envelopes instead of shoe boxes and tall plastic containers (similar to the kind you can store file folders in). And, honestly, most of the stuff that goes in the kids' envelopes are small and do not need a big box. The over sized items- that won't fit into the envelopes- are attached to the envelope with a rubber band.

How many times have we heard, "are we almost done yet???"... "how much more do we have to do???" I know I am frustrated when I can't see the end. That's another great thing about the system- the kids know exactly what is expected of them each day (complete the 12 assignments). They can see the progress they're making as they work through each box/folder. It is a great motivator for them.

I finally have found a system that allows me to get to all the fun things that I tend to put aside. If everything is pre-planned and all the items the kids need are in the envelope then they can work fairly independently (especially older children!).

If you want to know more you check out Sue Patrick's Workbox System. She has a book that is very slim and easy to read which explains her whole system (and her vision for the way it works... since I use it in a different way). Or feel free to ask me anything in the comments section or via email. And for anybody that may start this system, I have an email loop for sharing workbox ideas. (By the way, I do not know Sue Patrick.... I just love her system and had to share.)

Here are some pictures our our version of the Workbox System for all you visual people out there:

Each box has their own color for easy identification. Each envelope is numbered. As a child pulls out a new envelope they place their number on the sheet attached to their box. That way they can quickly and easily see the progress they're making.

Close up of one of the boxes

Side view.... This over sized puzzle cannot fit into the envelope so I've attached it to the envelope with a rubber band. I do this just to keep the child from forgetting items or being confused about what goes with the envelope.

Okay, I like the idea, but I told Leslie that I didn't think I could handle all of those boxes (talk about panic attack! LOL) but this seems more doable.

I love this idea and I'm not even a homeschooler. Now you just need custom cubbies to hold them all.

Jess said...

I am so looking for cubbies. Maybe I can get Chris to make some for me.

Jess, I don't know exactly what kind you are looking for. These might give you an idea of what is out there or what Chris could make.

Perfect Jess!!! Love how you adapted this for your large family and how it's working for you. I bought my shoe rack and bins tonight and will be working on them this weekend after we move (at least I hope so!) Can't wait to get started! ;)

I love the envelope idea. We only have 3 kids, but I know seeing into bins would be much to distracting for my DD and the baby - too much fun for him. Plus, we don't have room for all those bins right now. Thanks for sharing!

Your site was recently shared with praises of the Work Box System. I'm very interested in it as well as your email loop. How can you join the loop?

Jessica, I like how you've implemented envelopes. I am using cereal boxes -- decorated, of course. :)

We'll see how this goes.

Thanks for "showing" your idea. This would certainly work better for a family with multiple children in a smaller home. Can you share where you bought your plastic tubs?

Thank you,

I love the idea of this system. I always have things I want to try with my children that I could use with this.
Thank you so much for sharing this.

We have 4 kids and the system is too pricey for us, but I could definitely utilize some of the ideas. I would like to join you email loop also, how do I go about doing that? vickilynn10@yahoo.com

Great idea to modify the system a bit, 12 boxes and a shelf seems pretty bulky! It got me to thinking that maybe you could use large ziploc baggies to stay with the idea of having clear containers. I've purchased "school bags" in the past, that are big enough for papers (made by ziploc).
Thanks for the great idea to think outside the "box"!

I don't have room for the shoebox idea, but I already have lots of envelopes and love the simplicity of this idea! I'm going to go through my boxes of games, books, and activities that we never seem to get around to using and start "assigning" them next week.

Hi,
I like your adaptaion of this idea, which is new to me. Is the idea to do the boxes or folders in numerical or in any order that the child chooses?
thanks!

I like your modification. It makes sense for larger families-- have 5 kiddos.

Hi I just discovered this system yesterday, got the book today, and hopefully my supplies tomorrow. Love it! I am very interested in your email loop. How can I join? Thanks so much.

Vicki B. said...

I ordered the book after reading about it on almost everyone's blogs. I don't have room for 4 carts and all those bins and I would find it hard to hide those big bins you used. So I came up with magazine holders and put them on our bookshelf, which is right near where we "school".

sandwichinwi said...

Vicki B, I was just thinking to myself that magazine holders would be just the thing. Maybe in conjunction with ziplocs for the smaller, loose items (like pencils, scissors, etc.) And a little more visable than the envelopes.

Blessings,
Sandwich

LOVE it. Totally implementing this. Working on it this morning. I'd love to be in the email loop, too!

How do you keep up with keeping them filled for so many children? I have seven children, five who are "schooling" age.

Peggy said...

Jessica- I love this idea- saw Leslies and now yours. It seems like so much work for ME though!! Is it? Do they work pretty independently?

BTW- I totally missed that you got a new house (haven't been on FIAR) but somehow missed it on FB. It looks awesome! Love it! Love the Butler Pantry!!
See ya- Peggy

Hey Jessica! Love this idea! Thanks for sharing. We're just getting started with Ethan's preschooling and I'm definitely filing this idea for future use. I bookmarked Sue's website. Of course in our itty-bitty place we'll probably have to go with the magazine & zippy tweaking of the idea.

I just discovered your blog and can't wait to browse it more! I am intrigued by the work boxes but think that 12 boxes for each child is to much! I'd love to find your yahoo group. Can you share the link?

HI Jess :) I have 7 kiddos (ages 12 - 2) and am just getting interested in this system, working out the legistics of it though...
Currently I have 5 in HS, soon to be 6 and each of my children has a draw/bag containing all their 'school-books'. They each have an individual 'time-table' card that tells them what they are doing each day and at what time. My problem is that is only works half the time. I have some very slow workers and some speedy lets-get-this-don-rs. I think this system COULD work, but not quite sure how just yet. I'd need to find somewhere to store all the things that were NOT in use for that day - and my shelves are already overloaded with materials for 'when the next child needs it'. We currently only live in a small 4 bed house (UK size) and our dining room and schoolroom are one and the same - space is a premium - IE - there is none!! BUT I like the idea... any suggestions? I will be schooling a just 4.5yo, 5.5yo, 7.5, 8.5. 11 & 12 yo come Septemeper. Plan fo 4.5 is play lots! Plan for 5.5 is learn to read. Plan for the others - get better at what we are already doing :D

sorry just commenting again so I can get follow-up emails!

Hi Jess,

Just found your blog today. I'm curious what the dots are on the front of each box ~ are they velcro dots? They must be something sticky if your children put the envelope number card on the front when they get to each envelope (at least that's how I'm picturing it's done, based on your description?). I'll poke around your blog some more to see if you've answered this elsewhere, otherwise can you help me out with the answer? Thanks!

Gingerbread Mommy said...

Okay, first of all YOU have 8 kids?? I just learned about workboxes, and I love the idea, and yours makes it even better, I think. Your self-reward system, with the velcro dots and words/pictures is perfect. I can't wait to check out the rest of your blog!

Hi. I was wondering how you use the cute little "work with mom" labels at the bottom of the chart.

Thanks so much for your time in sharing and adding pictures. I'm excited about getting started!

God bless,
Cathy

Thank you so much for your alternate use of the workboxes. We are using your idea. I have not bought the Workbox System book, but have figured out enough online to help organize our homeschool. Your adaptation is a real space-saver! Now, if I could find clear envelopes instead of manila ones at a reasonable price, that would be the best thing ever! Perhaps before the new schoolyear we will find a good deal somewhere.

Lynn said...

I bought the book a few nights ago and can't wait to get started with the system! I don't have much room either and love the way you have adapted the system for your family! I plan on using your method for my 9 and 4 year old with FIAR but for my highschooler, I am going to try another variation I saw on another blog:

http://freshsqueezedlife.wordpress.com/2009/05/05/workboxes-my-variation-on-a-theme/

This variation might help commenter Caroline, as she was short on space too.

Thank you for your pictures. I decided to tweak your method, since I already had 2 Sterlite file folder boxes. I am using hanging file folders instead of envelopes for my 11 yr old and 16 yr old. Items too large to fit in or behind the folders will be referenced with an index card paperclipped to the folder. I am very excited! After 15 yrs of homeschooling, I just love it when I stumble upon something new that really WORKS, and makes us work smarter and not harder.

Thank you for posting your system for implementing work boxes. When I first read about the system I thought, "No way, too much stuff" since we have 9 children, but I can see it working the way you have explained it.

I love this idea and will probably start experimenting with it this week (we homeschool year round) since we are still working on different projects.

I especially like the idea of having the children do all of those fun things that I tend to never get around to.

Blessings,
Kimberly

wow, this seems do able. I only have 2 kids homeschooling this coming year but space is precious and well I'm not big on investing so much into more organizing ideas. I am a binder kind of person and I think this will work with supplies I already have using see through dividers with pockets. Not sure how I got here, blog hopping after a goodle search. But I think I will have to come back for another visit!!!

Thank you for posting your tweaked version. I have 2 at home and an toddler. Space is limited and I think your version just might work for us. I never would have thought of this on my own. Thanks again. Blessings to you.

Love this modification! I have been thinking about trying this system, but there was no way that we could fit all those carts and boxes around our house -- and we only have three kids.

We are up and running now (although taking a break for summer) and you can see a picture of how we've done it HERE:- http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_dglbAwOBvcY/SkqX-XDX5nI/AAAAAAAAFQg/nUmC0x7NxB8/s1600-h/IMG_0003.JPG

These boxes are great because they hold suspension files and are big enough to put some pretty big puzzles :D

It's working well for us atm :D

It was extremely interesting for me to read the article. Thanx for it. I like such topics and anything connected to this matter. I definitely want to read a bit more soon.
